As I was walking down the trail the day I left Salisbury, I saw a big group of teenagers. I was actually making a difficult descent, and I heard someone say, ‘Hiker coming through!” As I neared the group, one of the guys said, “Did you stay with my Great Grandmother, Maria McCabe?”I said, “Yes I did and she is AWESOME! I love her! He gave a big WHOOP and slung his fist through the air. He said he had asked every Hiker he passed if they had stayed with Maria McCabe and I was the first one he had met! Someone in the back of the group said, “Hey, Cameron finally met someone who knows his Great Grandmother.”I got the idea that they had been teasing him about it. Cameron was so excited! He wanted to take a picture with me. After we took pictures, he threw his hand up in the air and we high-fived one another.
He also told me he helped fix his great grandmother’s toilet. (Maria had told me her grandson had fixed the toilet.) I told Cameron, “Nice job! It worked great!” His friends apparently thought that was hilarious.
Cameron told me he was hiking with a Wilderness School, and they had been out there hiking and camping since Friday. I actually talked to several of the boys. They were all so nice. One of them held out his hand to help me as I was coming down off of a rock. When I was telling them that Cameron’s Great Grandmother took me to the hospital to be tested for Lyme Disease, one of the boys told me he had Lyme when he was 7 years old and was paralyzed from the waist down! I told him it was a serious disease and I was glad he was better.
Meeting Cameron and being a part of his excitement was the absolute highlight of my day! ☺️
